Warlock Round up -- Morvhanna

I find Morvhanna to be a very interesting warlock. The first one of this series to be very difficult to write a list for. As I was writing my first list I saw an interesting Skornergy (the concept of a model pairing that is the exact opposite of synergy, this can be very entertaining as it is usually due to a very small rule or wording of the unit) with the Tharn ravagers. As Morvhanna's feat doesn't allow for the ravagers to gain corpse tokens from killing models. Also as a note you want to avoid construct infantry as they do not allow you to gain fury from Harvest. So ignoring all my own advice my first list consisted of...

Morvhanna
2x Woldguardians
1 Woldwyrd
6 Tharn Ravagers w/ Tharn Chieftain
6 Bloodweavers
5 Skinwalkers
Sentry Stone & Mannikins
Shifting Stone w/ Stone Keeper
White Mane

As I noted above the mannikin's and Tharn Ravagers offer a lot less synergies with Morvhanna and this list turned out to be pretty terrible in game play. Though I do stand by Sentry Stones being a lot better then people give credit to them for. Free generating infantry and boostable sprays are pretty great.

I played vs. Severius2 as my match up in this game. My opponent was new to his warcaster as well which made the game more enjoyable. There wasn't many mentionable moments in the battle that are worth writing about. The battle was effectively an attrition grind fest, while my opponent was trying to eliminate my 2 heavy beasts to eliminate the threats on to his jacks while I was trying to get to his caster and finish him off. The game ended with an assassination on my caster from Blessing of Vengeance.

Things that I learned from game one was Morvhanna is a very powerful caster at removing groups of infantry with harvest up. One moment in the battle Morvhanna got aggressive and threw eruptions of life all over the place gaining fury from the destructive forces and threw another one earning her even more fury throwing another one! The infantry removable capabilities of Morvhanna is pretty impressive but restricted to the fact circle arc nodes are very slow moving.

I also learned you want to have a good unit with regrowth on it. This is a very key spell to Morvhanna's attrition style of game play. The unit I had it on was the bloodweaver who were staying back and dispelling Fear of God on my own units. With this knowledge I changed the list and was must more pleased with the results of the game.

Morvhanna
2x Woldguardians
1 Woldwyrd
10 Bloodtrackers w/ Nuala
5 Skinwalkers
6 Bloodweavers
2x Shifting Stones
6 Farrow Slaughterhousers

This next game was vs. Harbinger. The first thing of note is purification really sucks to fight as Morvhanna. Though this isn't some new amazing piece of knowledge and I saw this as a very hard match up for my Warlock. The game started out with Menoth being very aggressive and running right at me with the entire army getting ready to feat on turn 2. Turn one I charged his knights errant with my Tharn Bloodtrackers. This was relatively effective as I removed 5 of the unit, but wasn't what I had expected since self sacrifice takes away the ability to use the ability to shoot after they charge their target thanks to Nuala. Next time I'll just position my guys to throw their spear attacks.

The game then started to go down hill as any upkeep spell cast was quickly removed by purification. Also purification was removing my wold guardians ability to keep themselves and Morvahanna safe from the Reckoners shooting. I initiated the first big trade piece by slamming the avatar into a reckoner with my wold guardian applying some serious damage to the avatar and reckoner, while forcing the Harbinger to Martyr the vassal mechanic. This turned out to be more helpful then I had expected. The woldwyrd then moved within 10 of the Harbinger about 9 and 3/4ths and shot her for another 5 damage.

My opponent then spent the next turn dismantling my wold guardian and removing some of my waves of infantry from the table. As I was starting to despair I did notice this took a significant amount of focus from the Harbinger so she didn't have any to camp. I proceeded to threaten his army as much as possible forcing him to cut himself a few times (last turn he had used the excess focus to heal himself) and he was sitting there at 9 hit points with no focus. I teleported Morvhanna next to his paladin of the wall, popped my feat and killed him with her sword. If she had martyred it  then Morvhanna would've had a harrow target being the Paladin. Then Morvhanna burned an eruption of life onto the Harbinger, when it connected I only needed a 10 to kill her and burned my last focus in the hopes of ending the game as any attrition battle was going to end in Menoth's favor. Needing a 10 I rolled a 16 and annihilated the Harbinger.

Very fun game overall. Things that I have learned in this match up is Purificatoin is expensive to continuously throw for my opponent as it is annoying for me to suffer. That extra three focus could easily have saved his casters life. Also the Farrow slaugtherhousers offered a very real weapon master threat that is much needed in this list. I can see removing the skinwalkers and slaughterhousers for 14 pts and throw down Morraig and a unit of WoO.

So to modify the full list here is the next 1 I want to try with her.

Morvahna the Autumnblade (*6pts)
* Woldwyrd (5pts)
* Woldguardian (9pts)
* Woldguardian (9pts)
Shifting Stones (2pts)
* Stone keeper (1pts)
Shifting Stones (2pts)
Tharn Bloodtrackers (Leader and 9 Grunts) (8pts)
* Nuala the Huntress (2pts)
Tharn Bloodweavers (Leader and 5 Grunts) (5pts)
Wolves of Orboros (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
* Wolf of Orboros Officer & Standard (2pts)
Wolflord Morraig (5pts)

Once again I didn't play the caster I expected to. Cassius is still thwarting me when coming to writing lists. I hope to play Kaya1 very soon.

Morvhanna 1 - 1.

Warlock Round up -- Kaya2

As I had stated in the last blog I'm playing 2 games with every Warlock and trying to decide on which ones I really wanna prepare for Lock and Load, so I decided to write a blog for each Warlock experience. Sorry previously done Warlocks I won't be going back for you.

With Kaya2 my list for the 2 games was...

Tiers: 4
Kaya the Moonhunter & Laris (*3pts)
* Gorax (4pts)
* Feral Warpwolf (8pts)
* Pureblood Warpwolf (8pts)
* Warpwolf Stalker (9pts)
Druids of Orboros (Leader and 5 Grunts) (7pts)
* Druid of Orboros Overseer (2pts)
Warpborn Skinwalkers (Leader and 4 Grunts) (8pts)

To start off my 2 games were vs. Nicole's Skorne. First game was first Hexeris's tier 4 list.  We both were very under whelmed by the list but as the game progressed it turned out to be a very tricky and solid list. The praetorian swordsman died relatively easily to the druids and stalker, but this fueled the 2 ancestral guardians, Hakkar and Marketh. The game still went in my favor but it was mainly after a ghostly feral warpwolf with primal and forced evolution got onto Hexeris.

Game 2 was vs. Xerxis. This list I was also under whelmed by which was my downfall. Nilihiators with fury on them are a very destructive force, not to mention hard to kill when they pass 5 tough checks vs my Stalker! The amazing moment of the game was when the Bronzeback had fury and enrage on him ping ponged through my army with train wreck killing 2 skinwalkers, pureblood warpwolf, and gnarlhorn saytr.   A truely impressive show of destructive force. That makes it in my top 5 of most destructive uses of a beast/jack that I've witnessed.

Kaya2 1-1

Things I've learned about Kaya2

  • That the Druids of Orboros with vortex next to beasts making them defense 16 is really amazing. Even more amazing when your opponent continuously hits!
  • Gnarlhorn doesn't really have a place in the list. I am leaning toward some more infantry clearing help. The real finishing moves have come from ghostly warpwolves or just beast trading since the list has 6.
  • I'm thinking of a unit of shifting stones, ua and an Argus. The argus is really tempting with a stalker who goes berserk with 360 + it gives me a 4 point pow 20 bullet to throw away.
Next list to try for Kaya2...

Tiers: 4
Kaya the Moonhunter & Laris (*3pts)
* Argus (4pts)
* Gorax (4pts)
* Feral Warpwolf (8pts)
* Pureblood Warpwolf (8pts)
* Warpwolf Stalker (9pts)
Druids of Orboros (Leader and 5 Grunts) (7pts)
* Druid of Orboros Overseer (2pts)
Shifting Stones (2pts)
* Stone keeper (1pts)
Warpborn Skinwalkers (Leader and 4 Grunts) (8pts)

Next up is hopefully Cassius, as I've been dying to try a few ideas with him.

Three Posts in One

Took a short break, but I'm back

Running the journeyman league was a lot of fun but also caused me to grow tired of playing constantly.  The spell didn't last long and I'm craving to play once again! Another issue I think that killed my drive was the Farrow Faction though beautiful models with hilarious puns and all be it effective models doesn't give me enough options to suit my tastes.

The painted farrow at the end of the Journeyman League
The Thunder Hog and the piggies are being benched for one of my old favorites. I'll be going back to Circle for at least 7 months.  I plan on focusing on them practicing up to get familiar and comfortable enough to take them to Lock and Load.

I also can blame the slowness of blogs to a bit of fever I caught recently.  Though the fever isn't of the medical nature. It is more of the cardboard nature, the Magic The Gathering fever and though I find it very enjoyable I have curtailed it's advances on my gaming health and have resumed it's normal course.

The end of the Journeyman League!

The journeyman league was very successful.  Lots of models got painted, lots of games got played and it recruited a few new players to the group.  Which I personally consider the biggest bonus.

Greg's creative and bizarrely painted shifting stones and mannikin's
The Journeyman winner went to Paul one of our Cryx players.  He snuck in at the last minute with 20 points painted in the final week. Fantastic job Paul!

I won the Destroyer award, with Nicole winning the creator award. Fantastic job!

Creator goes to Nicole for her beautifully painted pirates
Back into Circle!

As I've started writing up my Circle lists and enjoyed the newer releases in Domination I picked up and dusted off the old models.  Built some of my more recent purchases and painted up a unit of Stoneward and Woldstalkers as well as the UA for my shifting stones.

My plan to get ready for Lock and Load is to lock in which warlocks I'll be practicing, so I aim to narrow it down to roughly 4, then 3 as we get closer to the event. The best way I see doing this is playing a few games with every warlock to get a feel for them again. I also need to look at the weaknesses of casters and try to pick warlocks that can be an answer for each other's weaknesses.

So far I've played both the Baldur's (pBaldur is still my personal favorite), pKrueger and Grayle. With Christmas coming up the next game will probably be in a few weeks. I'm looking at taking pKaya and Cassius next, if I can ever figure out the list I would take with him.

Caster Stats since I've come back:

pBaldur 2-0 - He is such an amazing tool box hard to really argue with him. My first warlock that I have probably over 100 games with. He's almost a certain lock for getting into the top 4.

eBaldur 1-1 - I really like him, he lets you play an attrition battle which I find interesting.

pKrueger 0-2 - One really close game vs Harbinger(only the Harbinger was left on the table) and one stomping by Rasheth. I have learned he is amazing at removing infantry and spell assassination runs on casters with weak stats. Depending on how my warlocks are looking if I need a hard counter vs infantry spam he might make the list. I do think he'll need Ghetorix to help counter his lack of armor punch.
*side note: Rasheth strength vacuum lists are nasty!

Grayle 2-0 - I really think he brings a very fast and aggressive style. I also realize that errants cancel everything his army tries to do. He definitely has the potential to make one of my lists thought he would probably be competing with eKaya for a spot.

I hope everyone has a good holiday and I suspect my blog will get a lot busier once everything settles. Lots of theory crafting and table top testing ahead!

Bartolo Montador vs. Moshar, The Desert Walker

First battle report written with my tablet while watching.  Made watching much more entertaining.

First the list break down.

Bart
Mariner
Buccaneer
Freebooter
Doc Killingsworth
Bloody Bradigan
Full Sea Dogs with Mr. Walls
Lord Rock Bottom

Moshar
2x Argus
Feral Warpwolf
Full unit of Wolves of Oboros + UA
Shifting stones
Sentry Stone
Wolf Lord Morraig

Turn 1 - is relatively uneventful.  Circle moved forward followed by pirates moving up poping Dougal's mini feat and killing 5 Wolves of Oboros with an aoe blast.

Turn 2 -  Dougal pulled out his quad iron killing 3 wolves of Oboros, Rockbottom killed 1 and Mariner picked off the UA.

Turn 3 - Mannikins charge forward to force Bloody Bradigan to take a tough which he passes due to Doc.  The 2 remaining wolves of oboros killed off Lord Rockbottom. Then Moshar teleports killing off his ssecond to last Wolf of Oboros to land a large spray onto the Sea Dogs.  Three sea dogs are forced to take tough checks which they pass.   Then Moshar throws out a crevase to hopefully force another spray into the sea dog unit!  It kills its target and forces 3 more tough checks which she fails 1 more.  That's 6 passed tough checks this turn so far.

Turn 4 - Bradigan starts off by removing 2 Mannikins. Dougal then aims and fires at the argus with the quad iron hitting four times doing 18 damage to the beast! The sea dogs then stand up the knocked down models and position for a round of pistol shooting firing into the argus and shifting stones near by. Though it was a glorious display of gun powder nothing was harmed.  Then the mariner followed up by removing the argugs and splashing 2 damage into the Dragoon. Then the freebooter kills off the Sentry Stone.  Bart then fires off a spray and feats.

The circle player then teleports Dragoon into Bart who needs a 10 to hit and misses.  Then moves up with Moshar and buffs the Feral.

Turn 5 - Bradigan moves up and attacks the Dragoon preping him for the Buccaneer to follow and kill the mounted version of the Dragoon. The sea dogs charge into the shifting stones killing two of them off. Doc takes a wild poisoned dagger throw at an argus missing, good effort Doc! Dougal then opens fire and blasts an Argus for 6 damage. The Mariner then fired into the Feral Warpwolf doing 3 damage.  The blast hit Moshar doing 5 damage to him which he transfered to the Warpwolf. The freebooter then walks up to the Argus needing a 9 to hit with no boosts then did 10 damage to the Argus.

Turn 6 - The circle then moves up with feral throwing the freebooter into another jack clearing the range for the Argus to charge Bart. The Argus then charges Bart eating a freestrike from a Sea Dog who lands a hit needing an 8 doing 1 point damage to the spirit blowing it out.  The Argus missing his pow 16 charge attack into Bart.

Dougal opens up the turn firing his quad iron into Moshar hitting all four times! Destroying him with his Quad Iron.
Great game to watch!

Carver vs Moshar Battle Report

A quick nod goes out to Greg.  Good job Greg on getting his shifting stones all painted up!  They look fantastic and great conversions.  Go desert circle!
Carver vs. Moshar

We are on week 4 of our Journeyman league.  As such games slow down, painting speeds up, some people drop out, some people really kick it up.  I was luckily able to grab a game in on Saturday, and it was a very enjoyable one.

Turn 1 - Carver cast mobility and batten down the hatches then moved forward 8 inches.  The brigands moved forward and dug in.  Slaughterhousers ran too the hill followed by 2 gun boars directly behind them.  Targ moves up to support them and gets ready for herding if necessary.  War Hog (first game with Thunder Hog!) runs forward as Carver's body guard.  Also a quick note, the Druids won't be able to push him back as Carver is directly behind him.

Picture for some reason was really fuzzy.  Still gives off a sense of the current battlefield.
The mannikin's move up with a teleporting sentry stone.  Druids advance forward and spam some clouds.  As well as some reshifting.

Turn 2 - The Slaughterhousers run forward, followed by a barrage of attacks from the Gun Boars killing 2 Druids.  Brigands move up and land a shot dealing 7 damage to Moshar.

Circle retaliates by attacking with an Argus.  After some amazing tough rolls (3 passes) he kills nothing.  The Druids then fail to kill the knocked down model with a few attacks and kill off a Slaughterhouser.  The feral warpwolf manuvers over to the flank.  Looking to line up some sort of assassination run in the future.  Also drop down a pillar locking Caver in.

Turn 3 - Carver opens it up by casting Batten Down the Hatches and Mobility maneuvers around the pillar, pops his feat and crushes the pillar.  The Brigands do hog wild and fire then engage the druids killing off a few.  This is where the druids fail their leadership.  War Hog maneuvers over near the Gun Boars and casts Massacre onto the Gun Boar.  Who then charges the Warpwolf boosts to hit and does a 4 damage dice attack dealing nothing to the Warpwolf.  His next attack deals 7 damage to the Warpwolf.  I then charge with my Slaughterhousers only doing 1 full 3 inch charge onto the Warpwolf.  He lands the attack and rolls 5 damage dice!  Dealing 15 damage to the Warpwolf followed by the other Slaughterhouser finishing off the Warpwolf.

Argus on the flank maneuvers around to line up an attack on something in my rear battlefield, maybe Carver. Moshar then is teleported by the shifting stones and takes a spray attack and a spell attacking doing only a few damage.

Turn 4 - Slaughterhouser charges Moshar putting a few damage on him and killing an Argus from the transfer.  Followed up by a hit by a brigand for only a few more damage.  Then the Gun Boar charges into Moshar taking every fury to land the killing blow!

Conclusion
Mental note, circles movement shenanigans are really fun to do and really bizarre to face.  I think the biggest issues there were too many support tools in the Circle force and Carver turns everything into a killing force during the feat turn. I think as points grow larger Greg's Moshar force will grow more deadly.

To Paint Or Not To Paint

I have finally finished painting my THUNDER HOG!  (Yes I know it's just a War Hog)

Thunder Hog!
I had spent a large amount of time converting him up and decided to spend a large amount of time painting him this past week.  It was intimidating to get started with him.  Though once I picked up the brush to just base coat the blue I couldn't put him down.  I really enjoyed picking vibrant colors to combine with the dark skin and grey hair of my army.  Not only is it aimed at being a center piece of my army but also some refreshing color to my dark paint scheme..

Back Shot
Lately in my miniature career I hadn't gone out of the box with conversions, elaborate basing or crazy paint jobs.  I used to love converting models, but I've always been the of type individual who focused on the game. I mainly focused on getting models painted, keeping them clean and trying to maintain some army continuity.  With the main focus on rules and synergy of the units I selected.
Left Side Shot
It was quite refreshing to get back to another part of the hobby. This project definitely showed me I shouldn't restrict myself to just the play style of units and the game. Lets not get confused here though, I'm not a changed man.  I still love playing the game and don't see it getting knocked off as my major preference.  I guess I'm just adding another layer to the hobby, one I had lost.

Right Side Shot
I do really enjoy the difficulties of the Minion faction and the creative sculpts the army offers.  This Journeyman league has been a great experience so far.

Lord Carver's Week 2 Army
I haven't been the only person busy painting this week. Here are some photo's of Nicole and Paul's great paint jobs they created this week.  Great job!

Week 3 Battle Reports and Recap of Current Totals

We had four battle fought tonight with plenty more to happen throughout the week.  Our current totals stand at...

Recap of the Journeyman League Totals

Cryx
Legion                                              5pts
Merc - Pirates - Nicole                   37pts
Minions - Thornfall - John              27pts
Minions - Blindwater - Lucas          9pts
Khador                                             21pts
Cygnar                                              2pts
Cygnar
Menoth                                             3pts
Circle                                                6pts
Circle
Skorne                                              11pts
Retribution                                       6pts

We definitely have a few front runners with Pirates getting a lot of games in and the most painted models.  Great job Nicole!  I'm currently in second with Steve nipping at my heals at 3rd.  The only different between Steve and I is the 6 points I've received from painting so far.

I also love how some of our new players are showing great improvement, great job Lucas and Matt!

Now to the battle reports (most of these will be short as I didn't fully watch any of the games)

Khador vs. Pirates

Sorscha                        Bartolo Montador
Destroyer                     Mariner
Juggernaught                 Freebooter
Bombadiers (min)         Buccaneer
Manhunter                    Aiyana and Holt
                                    Bloody Bradigan
                                    Dougal MacNaile

This battle started out with some barrages from both sides and quickly escalated into an all out throw down.  Bart popped his feat first and applying pressure to Khadors forces killing off the Bombadiers and Manhunter quickly.  Then Khador retaliated by pressuring the high armor warjacks.  The battle quickly boiled down to Bart surviving Sorscha's assassination attempt who then wind rushed away as it obviously wasn't working out.

Bart retaliated by eating a free strike and charging Sorscha.  She survived his barrage of attacks and brought the full force of her army onto him.  Missed both of the Juggernaught attacks needing 7's, landed the Destroyers attack putting Bart to 3.  Sorscha missed all of her attacks but one and failed to crack the Pirate Captains armor!

With the fresh reprieve Bart finished off Sorscha who was no longer defense 18.

Minions (Barnabas) vs. Skorne

Barnabas                               Morghoul
Spitter                                   2xSavages
Wrastler                                Gladiator
Croak Hunter                        Bloodrunners (min)
Thrullg                                   Void Spirit
Feralgeist                               Beast Handlers
Totem Hunter

As I watched the previous battle more I didn't catch much of this game's details.  Skorne claimed victory though, undefeated at this point!

Skorne vs. Pirates

Bartolo Montador                 Morghoul
Mariner                                 2x Savages
Freebooter                            Gladiator
Buccaneer                             Accuraii
Bloody Bradigan                   Beast Handlers
Dougal MacNaile
Aiyana and Holt

Pirates used their advantage very heavily with their shooting to force Skorne to close the gap and come to them.  Unfrotunately for Adam and his Skorne, Nicole's shooting really hammered his army.  That combined with Bart's feat really left him without many good options.  Skorne was out done by the Pirates shooting as Bart claimed a second victory and ending Adams win streak!

Khador  vs. Minions (Barnabas)

Sorscha                     Barnabas
Destroyer                  Spitter
Juggernaught             Wrastler
Bombadiers               Croak Hunter
Manhunter                 Thrullg
                                 Totem Hunter

Sorscha used her Khador forces very effectively to close the gap on the gators and line up Sorscha on a solid assassination run.  This was very effective as early on the charge lane opened up and Steve took it.  Slamming into Barnabas and using her feat to make every blow hit.  Barnabas went down with Sorscha's last attack, but the victory was short lived as Barnabas survived by a tough check.

Next turn after shrugging off stationary Barnabas clobbered Sorscha to death with a whirlwind of attacks.

New gaming table!

I am jubilant! I finally received my geek chic table. The wait was long ... very long.  Apparently they had a flu in office that added a few weeks, plus a few more ordeals.  When we had originally placed the order it was supposed to deliver a few months ago.  No point in focusing on the negatives though.  After my year plus wait It's here!
My emissary table

I ordered a pretty bare bones table in comparison to what you can get from them. The quality of the table amazed me.  A lot of solid pieces of wood, well framed, high quality, and lots of gaming flexibility.

Focusing on its gaming potential, it has an interior game space of 6x4 feet, which can easily be reduced down to a 4x4.  This allows me to play Unbound, standard Warmachine and even other games.

The acrylic topper allows me to use markers on it to block out objectives, terrain and whatever else might pop up as a necessity.

I went with the basic white board interior instead of the bamboo. The table was already a bit excessive in the cost department for us so we avoided the frills.  We did get the coveted drink holders though!

We played a few games on it this week, and it is a very nice gaming table with extra room for casualties and cards.  Overall a very positive improvement to my previous table.  Since I can put down the wood boards and eat dinner on the table!

I'll need to pick up some different color felts for this weekend, but I can definitely give geek chic a recommendation as long as you don't mind the very long wait time.  You get a very nice product.

A Saturday of gaming and painting

Bart's loyal Mariner
Gaming this Saturday was very low key. It was only my friends Greg, Steve and myself interested in playing. Nicole and I painted earlier in the morning, while she continued to paint throughout the rest of the day. She cranked out two beautiful Pirate Jacks AAARGH!  I finally finished up my warlock, Lord Carver, BMMD, Esq. III.  You can discuss a lot about his spells and stats, but nobody can argue he has easily the best name in HORDES.
Lord Carver, BMMD, Esq. III

The first battle today was a quick Kaya vs. Sorscha where Steve taught Greg the 19 inch threat trick.

Freebooter, Master of Hog Throwing
After that battle Greg challenged me and we had a Carver vs. Kaya battle. Just one game for the league, and then we decided to do a 50 point battle for fun.  I learned a lot of tricks this battle, one them being spirit door is a very hard, specially when Greg filled out the rest of his force with two units of shifting stones to add on to the movement shenanigans of his force.  He picked me apart with Spirit door slowly removing my Gun Boars then doing a drive by on the War Hog and poor carver trapped in the middle of shifting stones.  A very dirty trick I had taught Greg years ago!  As Carver was smashing through the stones Kaya lined up her Feral Warpwolf and proceeded to go piggy bowling! All in all a very amusing game.

The second game was a Harbinger vs. Maelok. Greg has a very effective Harbinger list he's been practicing and I think Maelok is one of the better options for Minions when facing the all powerful 12 year old blind girl.  The game started out very much in my favor with a good Bog Trogg ambush onto his knights errant.  Destroying everyone in the unit except the standard bearer that turn. Totem hunter and Gator Posse finished off the Seneshal.  Greg retaliated with a very powerful ranged turn from a Reckoner doing devastating blows to Maelok.  I didn't protect him nearly enough, and with purification removing spiny growth he was down to his 17 armor. Harbinger also popped her feat.

Maelok retaliated by popping his feat, effectively negating Harbinger's feat, though the Bog Trogs and Wrong Eye were too far away to be affected by Maelok's counter feat. I slammed into the paladins with the Gatormen Posse and Bull Snapper forcing Harbinger to martyr roughly 8 times, this was only doable because Greg kept rolling 1 point of damage!

The next turn Greg opened a charge lane with some paladin killing blows, including Vilmon slaying 1 of his own paladins of the wall! (Moral victory right there in my opinion.) Then sent the Avatar right at Maelok who was sitting on 3 transfers but only 2 hit points left.  The Avatar with guided hand rolls 3 1's missing Maleok with the charge attack. After the laughter subsided he took two more attacks forcing me to pass off 2 transfers.  Then the Reckoner took a ranged shot at Maelok needing an 11 to hit and connected, also setting him on fire.  This was transfered off as well.  Now for all the marbles.  The vassal moved up to the Reckoner and did an ancillary attack needing a 9 to hit on two dice.  Rolled an 11 and finishing off Maelok.

All an all a I like Maelok.  I think I would drop a turtle for another Gatormen Posse and tweak the list a little further.  I also want to experiment with Calaban vs. Harbinger.  I think I might be able to angle some good tricks vs. her.  Maelok is a little heavily reliant on some key up keeps, that are hard to manage with purification on a 10 focus caster.

Next up on the painting block is Thunder Pig!  Though I have no idea how long he will take to crank out. Until next time!

Week 2 of Journeyman League

Paul's Denegra
Week 2 is upon us and it started out with a really fun Friday night.  We had lots of games going on and people showing up with painted models to show off, all in all a good gaming session.

To start off Paul showed up with a really killer Machine Wraith that my picture doesn't give any justice, sorry Paul!  Paul also finished up his Warwitch Denegra, earning him 3 points for painting.

I finished up a pair of my Gun Boars, they've definitely earned their paint job throughout the course of the week.  Those pow 13 guns are not to be understimated!  I have been blessed with some nice caster shots and a few devastating blows to crucial warjacks.  They did fail me tonight vs. Bart, but only after using all the good ammunition vs. Paul's Cryx, but i'll dive into that as we approach the battle reports.
Paul's machine wraith

Pair of Carver Gun Boars

Kreoss vs. Stryker

I admittedly didn't watch this game in heavy detail.  I can point out some of the highlights as I was battling Cryx on the table next to it.  Dave our Menoth player kept advancing into the guns of Cygnar trying to take advantage of his arc node.

While Eric kept blasting away with his charger and black 13th, as well as his own arc node on the lancer!  The powerful shot ability on the charger landed some damage early on and racked up some damage boxes on Menoth as they advanced.

As the armies started to collide it seemed the Cygnar army was impervious with Strykers feat +5 armor, and Arcane Shield +3 armor on the Ironclade.  Taking him to a massive 26 armor, which is typically unheard of in Warmachine!

Dave was not to be daunted though as his crusader began picking up and chucking Eric's warjacks in a nearby shallow lake extinguishing the furnaces!  It was both hilarious and mournful as Stryker's forces who've been doing so well are being defeated by body of calm cool water.

The battle ended with Kreoss taking home victory for Menoth.

Carver vs. Denegra

This battle was truly about the Gun Boars as they opened up with a nice hit on one of Paul's bone jacks.  Paul retaliated by spraying and applying corrosion to half of my army.  Though the rest of the damage hits were mitigated by Batten Down the Hatches.  Such an amazing spell.

As the Cryx army rushed to calm the thunderous shots of the Gun Boars one Bone Jack bit the dust.  Once engaged quagmire on one of the Gun Boars helped mitigate the high defense of the Cryx jacks.  Though the one Death Ripper that closed in on a Gun Boar proceeded to heavily damage the pig.  With the mighty 20 armor the Gun Boar survived.

Carver decided to end this now as he saw his pigs taking a heavy toll.  With the help of his feat Carver charged the Slayer and landed a devastating blow.  This was followed up by a pair of Gun Boars battering the Slayer to dust freeing the War Hog to run off to engage Denegra.

Denegra being immune to free strikes (Doh!) backed away from the War Hog and proceed to shadow bind, parasite and bash the War Hog landed very powerful hits.

Though Denegra had lost too many much and Carver applied  lots of pressure as the Gun Boars finished off the Bone Jacks and Carver moved into position to charge next turn.  Denegra seeing her army disintegrate before her took solice in destroying Carver's War Hog before finally getting cut down by Carver's weapon, The Hand of God.

Bart vs. Legion

I didn't watch this battle at all honestly.  Only thing I noticed as I glanced over was Bart had removed all of Legions army and had put 12 solid points of damage on Lylth.  With Lylth's dying breath she landed a powerful bow shot, followed by a parasite and another bow shot to do enough damage to fell Bart (and Carver) has yet to pass a single tough check in the league so far.

Sorscha vs. Denegra

I only caught the highlights of this battle after it had ended.  Sorscha's crazy threat range of 19 inches got her into melee with Denegra and her trusty hammer Frostfang finished the job.

Carver vs. Bart

Going into this battle 1 to 1 a real grudge match has been a brooding.  Carver taking the first turn runs forward with everything except Carver who casts Batten Down the Hatches.

Bart using his superior range takes a shot with his Mariner landing one damage point to a Gun Boar.  The Gun Boars retaliated doing some damage to the Buccaneer and Freebooter.

Mariner taking a 2nd round shot blasts into Carver doing 4 points of damage.  The Freebooter charges into the War Hog doing really nice damage considering it was dice minus 7, but failing to hit with the grab and smash allowing to do its free two handed throw, the bane of the war hog's existence!

Carver calls his feat and charges the Freebooter.  I pick up my four dice happy to roll this devastating blow and see the dice come up 1 ... 2 ... 2 ... 3.  I did 3 points of damage to the Freebooter!  This throws off the rest of my plans the turn and I proceed to take a few pot shots off with the Gun Boars and attack the Freebooter with the War Hog who doesn't finish it off.  (I forgot to mention Bart's minus 3 to hit on feat turn is rough!)  Seeing a charge lane from Bart to Carver all be it too late.  Targ decides to eat the bullet and runs in front of Carver.

The next turn is humorous.  Dougle fires off his Quad Iron and misses with snake eyes.  The Mariner then deciding to kill off Targ to open the charge lane fires killing Targ, who decides to be too tough for a cannon ball and lies down instead (passed tough). The Buccaneer having enough moves up and skewers Targ's body on the ground.  With the charge lane free Bart charges Carver.

Bart lands two solid attacks on Carver who shrugs one off to a beast. (His 1 and only transfer)  Carver sitting at 13 def 20 armor with 5 hit points left thinks he'll survive the round to get his revenge on Bart!  Bart spend his last focus hits.  Picking up two dice we do a quick calculation of the odds.  Bart is pow 14, Carver is armor 20, with 5 hit points left.  Bart needs to roll a 11 or 12 to finish off the pig.  Nicole picks up the dice rolls them on the table and lands double 6's.  I am sweating now.  All I need is a tough check, I pick up my die and roll it, 3.  Game over Bart, you win this time but I'll get my revenge!

Battle Reports

I've tried writing battle reports in multiple different ways so far. I have found a few different things about them so far. The rigid turn by turn can be fun and seems fitting for tournament level games.   The short synposis work fine when doing a quick recap of battle box games.  Casual games seem to have an effective hybrid, using turn by turn but also just covering the highlights instead of heavy detail.

Another detail about battle reports that I enjoy is remembering the games. Thinking about the key moments, the ups and the downs and recapping the major high lights of the battle.

When I get lucky enough to write up a report with the person I played against the back and forth is also a very enjoyable experience.  The banter, the smack talking and the laughing about a bad dice roll.

Overall its a quick recap about why I love miniatures, this game and hanging out with friends.  And on that note a short battle report of the game I got in today.

Bart vs. Carver

This battle was another bloody holds no bar slug fest.  As we both get more comfortable with our new found Warlock/Warcasters we start to develop synergies with the spells and warbeasts.  This truly showed itself today.

Bart went first casting hot shot on the mariner and advancing the army forward.  Carver followed suit with mobility and batten down the hatches and moved forward.

Bart fired off the first barrage with the mariner hitting a gun boar but failing to break the palpable 20 armor of the gun boar under the affects of batten down the hatches. This turn Bart put up batten down the hatches as well.

The gun boars fired back doing only a few damage points to Barts army and this transpired back and forth a few turns while the war hog moved up.

The freebooter charged the war hog did minimal damage and failed to 2handed throw.  The war hog retaliated by brutalizing the freebooter, but with batten down the hatches he survived with every system intact except it's cortex.  Without its cortex the freebooter landed both inital attacks doing paltry damage to the war hog.  Then it's time to shine came with a grab and smash 2 handed throw launching the war hog a mighty 8 1/2 inches due to a good scatter away from Carver taking him out of batten down the hatches range.

Bart capitalized on this by spraying twice and mariner firing twice due to broadsides taking the war hog off the table.

Carver retaliated by popping his feat and charging hte freebooter destroying it.  The gun boars charged into the mariner hoping for some solid hits and falling short on scarpping it but putting it in a very damaged state.

Few more turns of dancing between the gun boars and the mariner was ended by carver charging into the mariner after one of the gun boars was bludgeoned to death by its mighty anchor.

Bart not in position to charge carver, without reach and a way to gain pathfinder, angled himself a few sprays before Carver could get a charge off.  Failing to land the critical charge attack Carver bought another attack landed it and boosted putting Bart at 4!

Bart deciding it was time to end the battle clobbered Carver with his initial attack for 11 points of damage!  Nicole has quickly learned the capabilities of her new warcaster and knows how to capitalize on its strengths.

Lather, Rinse and Repeat - Day 2 of Journeyman League

Saturday a group of people for the Journeyman League got together to play some more games.  Two of our players who haven't got games in yet showed up.  Here are a few brief battle reports plus a more detailed one of one of the more epic battles.

Bart vs. Denny

I didn't watch this game in heavy detail except for the ending.  At the end it only only Bart and a mariner vs. Denny.  Denny kept shadow binding the mariner.  Bart finally landed the killing blow after a couple back and forth rounds.  Denny's low mat made it hard for her to win out in a fight vs. Bart who has great melee stats at 15 def 16 armor.

Sorscha vs. Denny

I wasn't there at all for this game.  I was on a pizza run.  Sorscha won with a feat turn assassination run onto Denny with wind rush.

Carver vs. Sorscha

This game was actually really slow and boring so I'll keep it brief.  It was a shoot off, gun boars vs. destroyer. Once the gun boars showed they were going to win Sorscha started doing hit and runs with wind rush.  War hog got a charge off on the juggernaut removing it from the table and with some exceptional shooting I forced Sorscha to come to me.  She failed to kill the war hog by one and died to him on the following turn.

Bart vs. Sorscha

Turn 1 - Mercs

The jack's walked forward with Bart casting Batten Down the Hatches (BDH) and throwing Hot Shot onto the mariner. (Boosted damage rolls)

Turn 1 - Sorscha

Sorscha's battle group advanced under the protection of fog of war.

Turn 2 - Mercs

Bart upkept Hot Shot.  The buccaneer moved forward and attempted to net the destroyer, but fail short.  The freebooter walked up to be able to counter charge anyone who attacked the buccaneer.  Mariner stayed where it was taking an aiming bonus against the destroyer.  The shot hit but did no damage.  Bart broadsided to get another shot out of the mariner and popped his feat(she realizes this was a mistake in hindsight).

Turn 2 - Khador

Sorscha upkept fog of war. The destroyer opened the turn by firing and removing the net arm off of the buccaneer. The juggernaut moved forward in front of Sorscha who then cast wind rush to go up to defense 18.

Turn 3 - Mercs

Bart upkept hot shot.  The buccaneer ran in between the juggernaut and the destroyer locking both into combat and taking a wild pow 10 attack at the destroyer.  The freebooter moved to block a charge lane to Bart.  The mariner fired at the juggernaut doing minimal damage.  Bart then cast BDH.

Turn 3 - Khador

Fog of war finally dropped.  Sorscha casted boundless charge onto the juggernaut, wind rush onto sorscha and then feated and caught all of Bart's battle group in the feat. The destroyer shot the mariner and splashed damage onto Bart, though only doing minimal damage to both. Juggernaut charged the freebooter and was just barely out of charge range.

Turn 4 - Mercs

Bart spent 3 focus to shrug off stationary on everyone except the buccaneer.  Spent another focus to upkeep hot shot. Bart moved up, then the mariner moved up into base to base with Bart  and fired off a shot into the juggernaut missing.  The freebooter stepped up to the juggernaut hit twice doing minimal damage then landed a 2handed throw, but lost in the strength test vs. the juggernaut.

Turn 4 - Khador

Sorscha kept all of her focus.  Sorscha cast wind rush then proceeded to charge Bart. Sorscha did 6 points of damage to Bart and sat on 1 focus.  Never count out Sorscha though, defense 18 is hard to crack. The destroyer fired at the mariner doing 2 more points of damage to Bart and some damage to the mariner but no systems were crippled for Barts battle group yet. The juggernaut moved up and smashed into the freebooter, but spread out the damage so no systems were crippled.

Turn 5 - Mercs

This turn the game got really  quirky.  3 focus went to the freebooter and Bart sat on 3.  The mariner swung at Sorscha missing. Bart moved up boosted to hit and missed and then decided to camp the last two focus. The freebooter successfully hit both initials on the juggernaut doing only minimal damage, and with the grab and smash rule took a 2handed throw attempt again. This time succeeding and targeting Sorscha with her own juggernaut. The attack missed scattering directly into the middle of Sorscha, Bart, and the mariner.  Moving the smaller casters.  Bart didn't get knocked down due to being moved into base to base with the mariner who has the lash rule.  This knocked down Sorscha and the juggernaut, the juggernaut didn't have any crippled systems. The buccaneer moved up and engaged the destroyer.

Turn 5 - Khador

Sorscha paid to stand herself up leaving her with 5 focus.  Sorscha with reach bought and boosted two unsuccessful attacks.  The third attack connected putting Bart down to four health! The juggernaut stood up forfeiting his movement.  Took a swing with his axe missing and then took a swing with the fist connecting!  Though the damage roll didn't go in Khador's favor only doing 2 damage to Bart leaving him at 2 hit points! The destroyer took a freestrike from the buccaneer doing nothing and fired at the mariner hoping to splash damage onto Bart.  The attack missed and scattered onto Sorscha, mariner, and juggernaut doing 1 point to Sorscha leaving her at 4 hit points!

Turn 6 - Mercs

Bart allocated 3 focus to the freebooter, 1 to the mariner and left 2 on Bart.  The freebooter moved up with a backstrike swung on Sorscha with a boost needed an 8 and missed.  The second attack found its mark and with a boosted damage roll of 1 .... 1 ... then a 5.  Doing enough damage and ending the game!  The craziest game I've seen yet in our Journeyman League.

First painted model of the Journeyman league!

FIRST PAINTED MODEL!
While I was writing this my wife painted up her warcaster.

We also have our first painted model of the league!  Captain Bartolo Montadoor, congrats Nicole.

Journeyman League Starts!

Our journeyman league started today!  I love teaching new players how to play.  We got a few new players to try out armies and have some fun first time experiences.

Our Journeyman League consists of almost every faction which makes me very excited!

My first two games, which are mangled metal battle box games for people who don't know, were Blindwater and Mercs.

Bloody Barnabas vs. Lord Carver

Right before Carver charged Barnabas to seal the deal.
First round was me reshifting my army across the battlefield as the gators deployed on the opposite side near the lake.  While the gator player advanced (his second game of Warmachine!), we went over a lot of the basics while I tried to remember all the important details and rules Lucas needed to know.

Second round was a barrage of gun boars vs. the spitter ranged attacks.  I missed both my shots on the Iron Flesh wrastler and he landed a hit with the spitter on the boar tagging both with the corrosion.

Third round I fired both gun boars into Barnabas getting him to use his two transfers.  I then went with Lord Carver popped my feat (making him a weapon master), cast mobility (taking care of the swamp pit) and charged Barnabas.  The first hit landed a devastating blow of 34 damage putting Barnabas at 1 hit point.  I then bought another attack and finished the job, even though the attack only did a few damage.

Funny part is, things would've got really tricky if he had passed his tough roll.

Bartolo Montador vs. Lord Carver

This game was very amusing.  Though Montador and Carver's feats are very different the armies player very similar.  Both having batten down the hatches(BDH), with hindsight I think the edge went in my favor with BDH countering the knock down portion of his feat.

First few rounds were Gun Boars firing into the mariner while the Mariner fired back into a gun boar.  I landed a devastating blow early on with a 15 damage roll on dice.  Though the gun was the one system that stayed in tact.

The buccaneer moved up and tied up the gun boars.  Another shot from the mariner into my warhog, who then got charged by the freebooter.  The freebooter was played very well and did some damage to my warhog then tossed the war hog out of my warlocks control range.  Effectively allowing it to be knocked down even though BDH was up and did some serious damage as it got thrown into a wall.

The next turn I had to use Carver to destroy the buccaneer, and fired off another shot at the Mariner.  Since the war hog was out of my control area I couldn't stand him up in the maintenance phase so I just stood up and moved back into the control area.

Montador repeated the tactic and moved up pounded on the war hog with a few hits and tried to throw the hog again.  Luckily for me I was able to win the strength  test 1 dice vs. 2.  This was game altering, allowing me to destroy the healthy freebooter with my war hog as it only had 5 damage boxes left.  This was then followed up with some gun boars firing into the mariner making it a wreck marker.

Montador now standing alone takes advantage of the wreck markers around him for cover and sprays into my gun boar, but his 20 armor (thank you BDH) blocked the majority of the attack.  I moved up with Carver popped my feat and cast mobility.  Both gun boars knowing they won't hit Bart with +4 def charge.  The first attack lands, I pick up my four dice to roll damage very excited!  Bart sitting on 4 focus points gets ready to take a brutal attack.  The dice roll ... 1 ... 1 ... 3 ... 3.  I looked at the dice amazed, I've done no damage.  The next attack swings, connects, and does 3 points of damage to Bart.  The next boar goes, misses his charge attack, lands his second attack and does 1 or 2 more points of damage to Bart.  I definitely thought I had the game in the bag on that turn.

Bart activates, slaugthers the damaged gun boar collecting a blood quencher token (+1 str + 1 armor) and takes overtake to move an inch farther from Carver.

Carver casts mobility and charges Bart. I land the charge attack and put Bart to 5 hit points.  Carver then missed his next attack.  At this point I start to sweat, I know if I missed the next attack or even connect but Bart makes his tough check I'll be in a world of pain.  I land the blow and finish off his hit points.  My opponent (who happens to be my wife) picks up the dice knowing if she could roll a 5 or 6 the game was in the bag.  Stares me in the eye and rolls the die.  It comes up a 4.

I must give the MVP too Batten Down the Hatches.  That spell is amazing, even more so vs. the match ups I had today.  Barnabas and Bart both have knockdown feats and the buccaneer couldn't throw his net on me all game.

Very close game and very enjoyable.

Tuesday night gaming vs. Khador with a splash of Skorne

Had two fun games tonight.

Carver vs. pMorghoul.

First game was a quick battle box game.   Carver drew the first blood removing a Savage.  This quickly turned bad as he countered heavily by killing off my War Hog.  My back plan was to  pop my feat with weapon master gun boars and kill his Gladiator.  This never came to be as he popped his feat and stopped me from being able to force my beasts.

As I realized I was in serious trouble I knew I had to get aggressive. I popped my feat charged Morghoul and missed the charge attack needing a 10 with a boosted attack. Followed up with a hit doing 14 damage to his Gladiator from the transfer, then landed 11 damage onto Morghoul.  That was my turn.
Carver's battle box

I was in a weird spot, his beats were tied in with the Gun Boars and Morghoul had pow 9 attacks vs. Carver's 17 armor.  Adam (the skorne player) proceeded to roll exceptionally well with 2 16's and a 14 for damage. Doing a ton of damage to carver but not sealing the deal.  The gladiator walks away from both gun boars eating two free strikes.  Which did a whooping 2 damage to him.  Then boosted an attack with his mind blown giving him 2 dice to hit needing 9's.  He lands his first attack killing carver!  Adam walked away with his first hordes game triumphantly!

Now for the main event.

Dr. Arkadias vs. Karchev

I love Arkadias vs. Khador players.  I find it a great match up if you can position your feat well. I won the first turn due to my +1 from Arkadias's tier bonus.  I decided to go first and rushed forward to take advantage of the terrain and force him to come to my chokes.

Karchev pushed his threat range advantage a little too far and failed a Drago charge onto my War Hog.  He removed my gun boar from play and threatened me with  a Berserker on the other flank.  My War Hogs including the feat turn removed 2 Berserkers, the Slaugtherhousers removed the other one on the flank.  Finally my last War Hog killed a few Iron Fang Pikemen.
Battlefield after the hog''s ate Karchev's berserkers

Karchev now without warjacks had little options left.  Tried to get some bombard's plus sprays on Arkadius to no avail.  Next turn two aggression dialed War Hogs did the final points to Karchev for victory.

Overall a fun night of gaming.

Thunder pig!

In my last blog I had mentioned my Dr. Arkadius list that had three War Hogs. Well one of my goals when I started my pigs was to truly embrace the concept of War Hogs being made by a mad scientist.  As such I decided none of my War Hogs would looks the same.  I built one the traditional way, and I heavily converted the other two.  Here is the one I'm most proud of, the other one I think will pop better as it gets painted.

Day of the Pig!

With the new Journeyman League rules I have decided to start a new faction, Minions.  Even more specifically I will be targeting the Farrow pigs.  Truth be told my wife already owns a nice collection of gators I can use if I find necessary.

I picked up a nice assortment of piggies to try out.  I even took a list to a local steam roller rocking Dr. Arkadius and Barnabas (much simpler caster).  I did fairly well considering I had only played one of the lists once before the event and placed second over all.  Here is a quick write up of the event.  Normally battle reports will have pictures and more details.  Though this will be covering 4 games and is a few weeks old in my memory.

The lists were...

Dr. Arkadius
  -Gun Boar
  -War Hog
  -War Hog
  -War Hog
  -Targ
4 Farrow Bone Grinders
6 Farrow Brigands
6 Farrow Slaughterhousers

Bloody Barnabas
  -Blackhide Wrastler
  -Bull Snapper
  -Ironback Spitter
  -Ironback Spitter
Feralgeist
5 Gatorman Posse
Thrullg

First Game
Arkadius vs. an eIrusk and claimed the game with a tiebreaker when dice down was called.

Second Game
Bloody Barnabas vs. Vyros.  This game I won through scenario claiming 3 control points.  Barnabas's feat really helped this game letting me destroy 9 Invictors, a Phoenix, Hydra and 3 Sentinels in one turn.

Third Game
Bloody Barnabas vs. Siege.  This game was almost decided by the fact he had two shooty lists and no experience vs swamp pit.  This match up would be a game for me to lose, and I almost did!  I misread swamp pit and on the second turn misused it.  Allowing him a solid siege feat turn into my army.  Luckily for me I had sat on 2 transfers and had already killed the black thirteenth + some trenchers.  I was able to weather through that turn of shooting and assassinate Siege.

Fourth Game
Bloody Barnabas vs. Rhyas.  This game was really odd from the get go.  We fought for position a bit then the gatormen posse charged into warmongers.  Surprisingly only killing one warmonger.  The battle ebbed back and forth trading models.  It came down to the Ironback Spitter trying to two handed throw the Carnivean out of the circle to claim the last control point and win.  I rolled two 2's, and Legion player rolled a 4.  As a last desperate act Barnabas charged Rhyas needing 9's to hit and rolled 3 sets of 8's.  At this point I knew the game was lost and said I was done.  Legion player aptly removed the final models from the control point and ended the game 2 control points to 1.

Was a very fun event to be apart of and had some great games.
